About the School
The Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) is a leader in
public health, population health and health promotion.
The DLSPH has one of the largest concentrations of academic
population and public health researchers in Canada and is
responsible for more than $30 million in research funding each year.
Committed to advancing the health of individuals and populations,
the School is making significant contributions in areas such as:
chronic disease, infectious disease and genetic epidemiology; public
health policy; social determinants of health and social
epidemiology; global health; addictions; methodological research;
and occupational and environmental health.
Leaders in graduate education
The DLSPH is training the next generation of educators, scientists
and practitioners who will advance public health in Canada and
around the world. Close to 400 graduate students are enrolled in
doctoral and masters programs across seven areas of study.
The School offers a PhD degree in three fields of study for
individuals pursuing careers in research and academia:
Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Social & Behavioral Health Sciences.
Three professional Masters programs offer advanced training to
individuals entering the field of public health and to practicing
health professionals who wish to enhance their expertise:
• Master of Public Health (MPH), with specializations in
Community Nutrition, Epidemiology, Family and Community Medicine,
Health Promotion and Occupational & Environmental Health,
• Master of Science (MSc), with a specialization in
Biostatistics, and
• Master of Science in Community Health (MScCH), with
specializations in Addictions and Mental Health, Family and
Community Medicine, Health Practitioner Teacher Education,
Occupational Health Care, and Wound Prevention and Care.
Faculty Excellence
DLSPH faculty members are national and international leaders in
public health research and practice with backgrounds spanning the
humanities, social and behavioural sciences, and physical and life
sciences.
In addition to faculty with primary appointments in the DLSPH, the
School draws on leading academics, researcher and practitioners from
across the Faculty of Medicine and many collaborating institutions,
including the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion,
Cancer Care Ontario, the Institute of Work and Health, the Institute
of Clinical Evaluative Sciences and key public health agencies.
Leaders in Public Health Renewal
The School is also home to core postgraduate and undergraduate
medicine programs in Public Health and Preventive Medicine. The
residency program is the oldest and largest program in Canada and
has successfully graduated many of the leaders in public health
medicine in Canada and beyond. The undergraduate medicine program
Determinants of Community Health has a national reputation in
ensuring all medical graduates gain public health competencies.
