Academic Appointments

Graduate Faculty Appointments:

There are three categories of graduate appointments.  Not all DLSPH faculty hold graduate appointments. Graduate appointments are required to grade and set examinations and assignments for graduate courses, to be main instructor for graduate courses and to be a voting member of doctoral thesis committees.  A graduate appointment is not required to supervise MPH Practicum students. In order to hold a graduate appointment in the DLSPH and participate more fully in our teaching programs, a faculty member must hold an academic appointment (status-only, tenure, tenure-stream, CLTA or adjunct appointment) at the University of Toronto.

Full Members:

Full members may act as the sole or major supervisor of a doctoral or master’s thesis, and as a member of thesis committees; serve as chair or voting member of a final oral examination committee, where such examinations are required by SGS, and perform all associated duties; assume responsibility for the setting and marking of comprehensive (general) examinations; teach, set, and mark examinations for a graduate course and give such other graduate direction as may be required.

Normally full members in the graduate faculty hold an academic rank of Associate Professor or higher.

Associate Members:

Associate members shall be permitted to undertake all the duties of a full member but shall not serve as a sole or major supervisor, whether formally or otherwise, of a doctoral student nor act as the chair of a final doctoral oral examination. The graduate chair or director may place further limitations on the graduate activities of an associate member.

Members emeriti

Members emeriti shall be permitted to chair a final oral examination and to carry out one or more of the following: serve as a member of a thesis committee and as a voting member of a final oral examination; teach, set, and mark examinations for a graduate course; assume responsibility for setting and marking comprehensive (general) examinations; continue to act as a sole or major supervisor of a doctoral or master’s thesis; take on new master’s or doctoral supervision with the approval of the graduate chair or director.

Cross-Appointments

A professor who is appointed as a Full Member in the home graduate unit may be cross-appointed to another unit in the category of Full or Associate Member. A professor appointed as an Associate Member in the home graduate unit is not normally appointed as a full member in another unit. Graduate faculty with an Emeritus appointment should be emeritus across the board.

End of Graduate Faculty Appointment

An individual’s appointment to graduate faculty ends if, through death, retirement, resignation, or for any other reason, the individual is no longer eligible for the graduate faculty.

Application for a Graduate Faculty Appointment:

Faculty seeking academic appointments in the DLSPH: Normally when applying for the faculty appointment, applicants will also apply for a graduate appointment. The level of appointment should be discussed with the Division Head and/or Dr. Paul Corey, Associate Director, Education.

University of Toronto faculty who are currently appointed elsewhere at the UofT may request to hold a Graduate Appointment (SGS only) in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health for the purpose of serving on doctoral committees or having a major responsibility for a graduate course in the DLSPH. UofT faculty who wish to supervise a practicum student or guest lecture in a DLSPH course do not need to hold a graduate appointment. Graduate appointments will be given for a term of no longer than three years, and the specific purpose of the graduate appointment will be indicated on the letter of offer. To apply for a SGS-only appointment, please submit the following documents:

  • CV
  • Support from a DLSPH division head (can be via email)
  • Letter detailing the purpose of the graduate appointment (can by via email)
