Who we are 

Our Mission: 

The mission of the Public Health Alumni Association (PHAA) is to promote and sustain a spirit of fellowship among the alumni community and to foster relationships between public health alumni, the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and current students. The PHAA aims to support both students and alumni.

What we do

PHAA Conference Travel Awards

Recognizing the value of conference participation and the financial challenges students face, the Conference Travel Award provides support to DLSPH students and recent graduates who have had their graduate work accepted for presentation at conferences. The Public Health Alumni Association invites applications for Conference Travel Awards twice annually.

Eligibility:

  • The applicant must be both first and presenting author.
  • The abstract must be directly related to the student's thesis, practicum, or course work.
  • The applicant may apply for conferences occurring up to six months following graduation.

Awards: Four Conference Travel Awards will be available in each year. Each award will cover conference expenses up to $250. The award is administered as a reimbursement of expenses. Original receipts will be required.

Application Process:

A call for submissions will be circulated to students by email two weeks prior to each deadline.

      Period 1 (October submission): Covers conferences occurring between July 1 and December 31.

      Period 2 (April submission): Covers conferences occurring between January 1 and June 30. 

Applications are judged by a Selection Committee composed of members from the PHAA Executive as well as members drawn from the alumni community.  

Application packages should include: 

     1) a cover letter which includes applicant’s name, contact information, DLSPH program, advisor’s contact information, and meetings or conferences at which the work has been previously presented;

     2) a copy of the abstract as submitted;

     3) conference details (title, date, location) and confirmation of abstract acceptance; 

     4) detailed conference budget indicating other financial support requested or received.  

Students are encouraged to indicate in their cover letter how this work contributes to public health research and practice and how the selected conference will contribute to furthering their area of scholarly study.

Support for Student Activities 

Student groups may apply once annually for an operating grant to a maximum of $250. 

Suitable projects include student group activities that are primarily educational in nature and are focused on topical issues relevant to public health. They should be of interest to more than one group and open to all streams. These can include working groups, journal clubs, student conferences, and guest speakers. Lunches, parties, etc. are not eligible for funding. 

Please submit a brief proposal, including the purpose and scope of the activity for which the funds are requested and a detailed budget indicating how the funds will be used. 

Mentorship Program 

The Mentorship Program, established in 2001, is designed to connect public health alumni with current students. The Program provides an excellent opportunity for students and alumni to build lasting relationships based on shared areas of interest. 

Interested alumni are asked to complete and return a short profile (questionnaire) which will be made available to students at the start of the academic year. We ask that mentors commit to the mentoring relationship for a period of six months. Participating mentors have worked in government, university and research institutions, health agencies, hospitals, private sector, and not-for-profit organizations.

Alumni Networking Events 

The PHAA organizes alumni networking events in Toronto and cities throughout the country, often in conjunction with national conferences. Past networking events have included receptions, breakfast meetings, speaker sessions, and informal pub nights.  

Upcoming events are announced in our newsletter, in conference programs, or through a broadcast emails to alumni, faculty and students.  

College of Electors 

The Public Health Alumni Association is responsible for appointing a representative to the College of Electors.  

The College of Electors is a committee of 44 alumni who are responsible for electing the Chancellor and eight alumni members (alumni governors) of the Governing Council of the University of Toronto.   

The Governing Council is the senior governing body that oversees the academic, business and student affairs of the University. It is composed of 50 members drawn from faculty, staff and students of the University as well as members of the community at large. Members of the Governing Council, including alumni members, serve as trustees of the University. They oversee the management of the University and ensure that the decisions that are made by the Council are in the best long-term interests of the University.
